Glacidea

In Case You Missed It of the Day: To the bitter disappointment of equal rights advocates across the country, North Carolina voters passed a constitutional amendment late Tuesday that bans marriage between same-sex partners. Amendment One passed with 61 percent of the vote — or 1.3 million residents in favor.
And it’s worse than you think — the amendment doesn’t merely ban gay marriage. The legislation is among the most conservative in the nation, leaving no room for legal recognition of civil unions or domestic partnerships.
President Obama’s North Carolina spokesman says the president is “disappointed” by the outcome of the election, but declined to elaborate. Obama is scheduled to sit for an interview with ABC News today, “during which he is likely to discuss his ‘evolving’ views on the issue,” according to the New York Times.

Marriage aside, this means that all partners in civil unions- and any children they might have, as well as some children of single parents- now have NO HEALTHCARE.
Nice going, conservatives.

Just going to say that not all were in favor of this. My girlfriend, friends, and I all voted against and our city of Greensboro was majority against it. Marriage is already illegal for same sex couples and there’s no recognition of civil unions for gay people as is, so this bill was absolutely pointless. It was a ploy to get republicans to the primaries and then to vote for this piece of shit amendment.
This amendment did nothing but rub salt in the wound of those it was trying to effect and it hurt so many others with its vague wording. I’m extremely upset by this as I was expecting it to fail. Watching the polls last night made me feel worse and worse as more and more counties became the green of support on the state chart. I wanted to scream at them that this bill doesn’t do what they think it does.
The thing is, each main side here feels like a minority, the christian fundamentalists and the LGBT community fighting hard against this. It’s clear which one is and which one only wants to feel like they are. Everyone loves an underdog story and to feel like they fought to be heard. Way to go on hurting hundreds/thousands of kids and straight civil unions. I hope you feel proud and will own up to the consequences of your actions.
You know what, though? This amendment doesn’t change anything for me. I’m still madly in love with my girlfriend. I’m still a lesbian. I’m still going to have a wedding if the time comes and I want to get married. I’m still going to fight for hospital visitation rights and other rights with the woman I will spend the rest of my life with. This changes my legal recognition, but I don’t need the government to recognize how I feel. I just pray that those who had civil unions and who will be affected by the run off consequences of this backwards amendment will find a way to make it through.
